If you were at practice last night, you saw the Heaters take a huge step forward defensively. The coaching staff failed to prepare the team in a complete defensive manner before our first tournament last weekend in Knoxville. After seeing the level other teams are at defensively last week, we decided it was time for us to get to that level. And we feel we took a huge leap in getting to that point last night.
The kids picked up real quickly on hitting cutoff men and which base to try and stop advancing runners. The coaching staff was shocked and pleased with how rapidly the kids learned which base to make their throws to depending on where the base runners were located. It was fun to watch. Unfortunately we did not have as much time to work on the infield situations and recording outs at lead bases last night, but we'll work more on that next week.
Hopefully that as the time changes this weekend, we'll be able take advantage of the sunlight (and hopefully warmer weather) to continue to practice our advancements in defensive play. With just over a week until our next tournament in Kingsport, TN, I can honestly say I am excited to see our team play again and continue to progress.
